Overview

Position Summary

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, led by Prosecutor Ryan Mears, is setting new expectations in the criminal justice system and is committed to a fair and equitable system. The office is seeking a Victim Advocate to serve and assist victims of violent crime through the justice system during the prosecution of cases in Marion County Criminal Courts. The position requires a self-driven and compassionate individual who can work well as a member of a prosecution team.

Position Responsibilities

  • Maintaining communication with victims and family members and providing updates regarding the criminal case.
  • Recording accurate information regarding victim contacts in an online case management system.
  • Providing victims and family members with referrals for counseling, violent crime compensation, and other community services.
  • Meeting with victims and attorneys in preparation for trials.
  • Attending depositions, trials, and sentencing with victims and families.
  • Assisting with creating victim impact statements for presentation in court.
  • Completing technical and awareness training to provide competent and culturally appropriate advocacy to all victims.

Qualifications

  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice/Social Sciences; or Paralegal Certification; or two years of previous experience working with people in crisis situations or the criminal justice system.
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills.
  • Have the ability to work independently.
  • Display proven experience working in an unbiased manner around clients of diverse situations and backgrounds.
  • Adhere to strict confidentiality requirements.
  • Prior computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience with a prosecutor’s office, law enforcement, and the court system preferred but not necessary.
