Job Description and Duties

This Network Administrator position is an exciting opportunity for an experienced IT professional to support and enhance the enterprise network infrastructure behind the FI$Cal system, which serves thousands of users. In this role, you'll help ensure the reliability, security, and performance of the department's network environment while working on a variety of complex infrastructure initiatives.

You'll design, implement, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise networking technologies, including Cisco and Meraki networking equipment, Palo Alto firewalls, F5 load balancers, VPN and remote access solutions, wireless infrastructure, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). You'll also lead infrastructure projects, evaluate emerging technologies, support system modernization efforts, and provide technical guidance to colleagues and stakeholders.

This position offers a dynamic mix of hands-on technical work, analytical problem-solving, project leadership, and collaboration. You'll contribute to secure, high-performing technology solutions while developing technical documentation, supporting operational excellence, and helping shape the future of one of the largest and most critical statewide IT systems.

Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Working Conditions

At FI$Cal, we currently offer a remote-centered position with the flexibility of telework up to three days per week. In-office attendance is mandatory on designated days and is subject to change. Our office is located at 2000 Evergreen Street, Sacramento, CA. Candidates residing outside of California are welcome to interview, but proof of California residency is required before appointment. Please note, relocation and commute expenses are the responsibility of the employee.

This position requires prolonged sitting in an office-setting environment with the use of a personal computer. Employees must demonstrate a commitment to maintain a working environment free from discrimination and sexual harassment. All staff must maintain regular, consistent, predictable attendance, maintain good working habits and adhere to all policies and procedures.

  • This position requires the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and may require excess hours to be worked.

  • The incumbent provides back-up, as necessary, to ensure continuity of departmental activities.
  • This position may require the use of a hand-cart to transport documents and/or equipment over 20 pounds.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Experience with installing, administering and  supporting firewalls
  • Experience with vulnerability and patch maintenance on network equipment and support tools
  • Experience with installing, administering and supporting load balancers
  • Experience with installing, administering and supporting routers
  • Experience with installing, administering and supporting switches
  • Experience with installing, administering and supporting wireless (Wi-Fi) networks
  • Experience with troubleshooting connectivity issues within a Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN)
  • Experience with using a help desk ticketing system

Statement of Qualifications

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ)

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required and must be submitted with your application. The SOQ serves as a documentation of each candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing.

1. Describe your experience with configuring and deploying and maintaining a firewall in a production network environment and applying industry security best practices.

2. Describe your experience with deploying switches and routers and configuring them for daily use and applying industry security best practices.

3. Describe your experience with the deployment of physical or virtual load balancers and configuring them for load balancing applications.
